Stop in today :) The Coffee SnobSnob probably isn’t the best word. conosur, officianado, Those both sound a little too cosmopolitan for now, I will stick with snob. (easier to spell) I was working in Anchorage with a typical Alaskan character. Alaskans have habits, that seem strange to a newcomer or cheechako. One of his habits was stopping at one of the local kiosks, and ordering something called a “Raspberry latte’” He had his own little language that he used when ordering. this was way before Starbucks, so i had yet to hear the lingo. It took a couple of months before he talked me into blowing a half hours pay on a cup, but from that moment on, I was hooked. I went home to my wife and tried to explain my experience. She didn’t get it either at first. Within a couple months, I had her hooked also. Fast forward, it is 2010 almost 2011, I have refined my tastes over the years, developed favorite combinations, favorite barista’s and favorite places to get my fix. Mocha Moose it top on the list! Most of their baristas’ have been working there for seemingly ever. They know what I drink, they now how to make my wifes weird drink, they know what treats my dog prefers, and they always put a smile on my face with a friendly disposition, and a Great cup of coffee. The “coffee kiosk” has become part of my life, and a line item in my personal budget. Same with my wife, When we are traveling in the lower 48 they are not nearly as plentiful as in Alaska, I remember with horror, the first time we realized this. Now, we are very careful not to get to far from a town big enough to sport a kiosk. Call it maturity, or self indulgence, but today, I know exactly what Iwant in a coffee, and when I am away from my home haunts, I know how to make myself a great cup. I have even been known to drink high quality decaf. It all starts with good beans and a good roast. I know nothing of what makes a good bean or a good roast but I do no the smell. Both when I open the bag, and when i brew up a cup. fifty percent of taste, is actually smell, and a good quality clean roast produces that smell that Alaska wakes up to. A couple years back, I received a cool little portable french press as a Christmas present. Today, that little device is at the top of my “prized possession” list It goes with me on all my Alaskan adventures. People know me by the awesome coffee I can make even under the most inhospitable conditions. For Alaskans coffee is an experience, and Mocha Moose is the biggest part of that experience for many many Alaskans. Last Updated (Friday, 10 December 2010 16:01) |
